This site's platform is changing. Leaving WordPress. It's a good time to group all of the old English material, because I won't post in English anymore. The reason I am quitting writing in English... It is a very boring and time consuming task to translate the content I wrote myself. I can write better and faster in my mother tongue. Beside, there are much more better content in English on the web.
Since the majority of the old site's visitors were English speaking people, old URL will redirect to this page for a while. What redirect? I was using yuzgen.com main domain for my blog in the past. It's my surname and I thought it was selfish. There are many people with this surname. Some of them are my relatives. I'll be using boke.yuzgen.com subdomain from now on. This way, other people with Yüzgen surname can also use this domain.

Der siebente Kontinent. There, Haneke used hard cuts and no music. Since Haneke shot his film four years before Blue, the credit goes to him.
Kieslowski uses still camera while shooting Binoche closeups. Beams of light appear on her face, moving gently as a symbolic link to deep sorrow. Blue is not used in its freedom meaning. It represents sorrow, cold and desperateness. The most beautiful colour is the name of the most beautiful movie of the trilogy. Even though
Red and
White are very good, it's easy to pick up the best.
I don't wanna spoil the movie. The audience becomes like people who are traveling in a fast bus, where the driver is using brakes often. Forwards-backwards forwards-backwards... That's why this movie's genre is often called anti-tragedy.
Director, symbolism, music, protagonist, director, symbolism, music, protagonist, three, colours, blue... Maybe because of he lived his feelings deeply all his life. His heart could not go on and stopped on March 13, 1996, while he was only 54 years old. Here is

Kieslowski’s 3 color trilogy is one amazing masterpiece. If you are in the mood for a deeper emotional and mental experience it’s highly recommended.
Coupling, Avrupa Yakası and thievery culture
A scene from Coupling on BBC:
"A man is in love with his colleague. In a head-to-head conversation on the man's birthday, she tells him to blindfold himself and wait a while for a surprise. Being addicted to the woman, the man automatically thinks she's getting undressed and the surprise is sex. He decides to get naked. While he's getting naked, the woman takes all of the colleagues to the room our poor man is waiting. He takes off his underwear and throws it off. That last part flies over the supervisor's head. Upon hearing the crowd's voices, he opens his eyes and notices the innocent surprise."
I saw this joke played by amateurs on a cheap production on TV once. It was carbon copy. I grinned. When I saw the same joke on one of the most watched TV series of Turkey called Avrupa Yakası, I thought it was too much. I only watch that show if I have to. I suppose its script is fulfilled with ripoffs. Shameful.

Sterilization
According to ABC, from the early 1900's to the 1970's, some 65,000 men and women were sterilized in USA, many without their knowledge, as part of a government eugenics program to keep so-called undesirables from reproducing. Any list which includes Bill Gates in a list of “inventors” is worthless. Bill Gates ripped off BASIC, ripped off CP/M to create QDOS which he used for the base for DOS and later Windows, bought Spyglass Mosaic and re-named it “Internet Explorer,” and has had other people doing all of the programming. The only innovation ever to come out of Microsoft? “Microsoft Bob” and even that wasn’t by him, but by his wife Melinda! Some of the real story here:

A few bad links. Zworkin is credited by Motorola with inventing television. His TV never worked until after he visited Philo Farnsworth’s lab with the understanding that they were going to buy the Farnsworth patents. they took the idea and never did pay. They lost the lawsuit, but played delaying legal games to get out paying. Farnsworth also invented the only fusion reactor that is in commercial use today. It doesn’t produce power, it is used as a source for neutrons and high energy X/Gamma rays. Zworkin was like Gates, primarily a businessman.

Everybody on that list deserves respect for one reason or the other (even Bill Gates) and Linus is no doubt a genious. But to put those last computer guys on there above Alan Turing, Ken Thompson, Kernigan & Ritchie, John von Neumann … ? Anyway, lists like this are always somebody’s perception.

I have respect for Linus, but an inventor? He re-implemented unix for the i386 architecture, i don’t call that inventing anything. The invention was mainly done by Dennis Ritchie who was part of the creation of C, together with Brian Kernighan and Unix, together with Ken Thompson. Credit where crdit’s due, I say… Bill Gates, now that’s an inventor, he invented in Billing people (pardon the pun) for the right to use software and in doing so, effectively restricting people’s freedom. Now that’s an invention that really changed the world. Although not for the better…

Why is bill gates listed as most influential inventor? i mean sure he is influental and successfull. but all he did was marketing the idea’s from others as his own. i would not call him an inventor.

I see Italians are greatly underrepresented. Only two people, three if we count Archimedes of Syracuse (now in Italy, but then of Greek culture). At least Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo Galilei and Enrico Fermi cannot be left out. And Antonio Meucci invented the telephone, not Bell.

Mac OS vs. Windows vs. Linux
I'm going to introduce each operating system generally, then review for six types of users individually.
Mac OS
It's a Unix-based OS, which is good, but requires an expensive Macintosh to run. This is not a real barrier for geeks. OSx86 project made possible to run Mac OS X on IBM compatibles years ago, but it's illegal. Check out
Psystar Corporation for instance. Apple lost the hardware speed race years ago. They started to sell Intel based hardware instead of Motorola. Therefore, the only real difference behind Macs and IBM compatibles is EFI nowadays. Lately, Apple left their customers alone in the dark. PPC owners can't upgrade to Snow Leopard. Don't worry,
there is always Linux. Less hardware is supported than Windows or Linux. Some companies use this phenomenon to their advantage. Take
OCZ Vertex Series Mac Edition for instance. It's more expensive than regular OCZ Vertex Series. It's the same product. The only difference is the sticker!
- Mac OS for designers: They are Apple's main target audience. It's the traditional and perfect platform for many design disciplines. Designed for designers, just like Helvetica. That's why it was the default typeface until Mac OS X. This caused Helvetica to get overused. There's even a documentary on Helvetica. It's still essential in Mac OS X though. You can render your system unusable if you delete Helvetica.
- Mac OS for gamers: They need DirectX to run the latest eye candy games. Mac OS utilizes OpenGL and only a few games will run natively. Not an option for hardcore gamers.
- Mac OS for developers: I met a lot of developers using Linux and Windows in real life... None of them used a Mac. I'm not a developer. I don't have enough knowledge to share my opinions safely. Please you share yours if you're a developer.
- Mac OS for naives: They like ease of use. They don't know how much RAM their computers have. They choose computers like fruits in big stores. The way windows animate while minimizing are crucial. They don't know where the setting are, they don't want to learn, still want to find out as soon as they need to change something. Mas OS is a better choice than Windows for naives.
- Mac OS for workers: When I say workers, I mean a generic profile, generally white collar office workers. They are neutral. They don't need specific software. They need an office suite, an e-mail client with a calendar and a browser. Almost any computer and OS will do. Why pay more for a Mac? Maybe the absence of viruses… Then why not Linux?
- Mac OS for geeks: Put hardware enthusiasts, hackers and alike here. The crowd who know what they're doing. It's hard to sell something overpriced to them.
Windows
Windows runs everywhere, including Macs, via Boot Camp. It has a big library of compatible applications and hardware. Too many alternatives. You can't choose the right one easily. You can buy or build any combination of hardware you want. Coming from a single machine, single user tradition, MS operating systems have many design flaws. Windows has a GIANT collection of malware waiting for you.
- Windows for designers: As mentioned above, most traditional designers will prefer a Mac. Non-traditional designers, however, mostly use Windows. They design for new media, such as web, CDs and DVDs. Being relatively newcomers, most of them had a computer at home and it was most likely running Windows. Beside, Windows has the advantage of being the primary testing platform. Most of the audience is using Windows.
- Windows for gamers: Winner. Windows has DirectX. Almost all of the newest hardware is supported, having drivers from the original manufacturers. Gamers want the most out of their money. Most of them are young. They collect money or wait for the Christmas or their birthdays for new hardware. They love to show off their graphics cards' benchmarks. They want the newest hardware. No competition. Only game consoles.
- Windows for developers: All they need is a good code editor and some compilers. I can tell every OS has good editors but I don't know anything about compilers. If you're working on Windows software, you can use virtualization software such as VirtualBox.
- Windows for naives: Very dangerous! If you install Windows on their computers, they'll call you every day. You don't want to mess around with malware and/or strange questions. Try Ubuntu. Besides, they love eye candy. Vista and 7 have eye candy, but lack way behind Linux Compiz. If they are switching from Windows, go for KDE (Kubuntu?) rather than Ubuntu . They will feel at home.
- Windows for workers: They are neutral and will use any OS. They won't complain. The companies using Windows need to pay big amounts of money for licenses. They also need to hire a lot of people for the IT department. It's a ridiculous choice for corporate environments.
- Windows for geeks: Most hackers use Linux. Hardware enthusiasts will use any OS they could find. Many smart companies like IBM and Google use Linux.
Linux
I saved the best for last. Here's the road to freedom. Open your source if you trust yourself. Knowledge grows when shared. It's the best for humankind. Two developers don't have to code same lines if all is shared. Go for Linux from scratch or choose your favorite distro from a great collection of choices. Some funny application not translated to your language yet? Head over to
Launchpad, translate it and feel good. Are you a developer or a designer? Join a team, do something useful and gain experience.
Can you make money from Linux? I proposed to transfer worker computers from Mac OS or Windows to Linux to my employers several times. One of the reasons I was rejected was the absence of experienced Linux support. Besides, I have worked with web developers who made good money. Web sites are mostly served on Linux servers.
- Linux for designers: There is no replacement for Adobe software and FreeHand. It's not a choice for me and many other designers. Let's hope Linux users to grow and companies like Adobe to smell profit there. Then they will port their software. Web designers can try to use GIMP instead of Photoshop. They also shouldn't be using Flash to work happily on Linux.
- Linux for gamers: I already announced the winner for hardcore gamers. However, casual gamers can live with Linux.
- Linux for developers: We need more developers. Linux is the future. Go for it if you didn’t meet Linux yet.
- Linux for
naives: They usually use Windows. It's a dogma. Show them. Tell them Linux will win, just like Firefox. It's hard for them to make the switch. If you are a Linux user, you can help them. Linux is much better in every aspect for a light computer user. Much safer and faster.
- Linux for workers: Here lies a very conservative crowd. If the decider of the company is the IT manager, no matter what, he will reject the switch. He will know there are many Linux geeks out there and he'll get fired sooner or later if the switch begins. If the decider is the boss, tell him about innovation, no, wait, tell him about money. His profit will grow and his company will have a safer network. If you can tell properly and he can understand you, the switch will begin. Linux is obviously the only choice for corporate environments and office users. Tell them good!
- Linux for geeks: Most of the hackers use Linux. The hunter doesn't want to get hunted. Hardware enthusiasts are already using Linux to get the most of their hardware. Faster web servers, file servers, media centers etc. are achieved by using Linux.

- Designers: MacOS>Windows>Linux
- Gamers: Windows>Linux>MacOS
- Developers: Linux>Windows>MacOS
- Naives: Linux>MacOS>Windows
- Workers: Linux>MacOS>Windows
- Geeks: Linux>Windows>MacOS
Marketing Linux
Since Linux is FREE and wins many battles, let me promote it. Who am I to talk about marketing Linux? Linux is decentralized and belongs to everybody. I don’t have to ask for permission. Being in communication business for over 10 years, I can say every product and service benefits from marketing. Linux users are responsible to promote Linux. We don't pay a dime for a great kernel, superior distros and applications running on them. If you’re a friend of Tux, you can always help. Promote it to your friends, help them installing and learning, post to forums… Every word counts. Apple is marketing Macs with the slogan "The world's most advanced operating system. Finely tuned.". Microsoft uses "Your PC, simplified.". According to which measurable data can they use these slogans? Then there is Linux, which is FREE in every aspect, financial, philosophical etc. It's objective and real. In marketing, FREE is a magical word. Most people will think they need to pay for some other thing to get the FREE gift. Tell them Linux is TOTALLY FREE. It needs to be told to the masses. Don’t just say “Linux is free.”, shout “Linux is FREE!!!”. We need to concentrate on developers, geeks, workers and naives. If Linux gets installed on more of these people's computers, gamers and designers will follow. Because commercial software companies, including game developers will smell money. They will see the big Linux market and won't be able to ignore anymore. Marketing to geeks is secondary. It's already their primary choice. There are objective results such as benchmarks and statistics. Most of the
supercomputers also run Linux. Marketing to naives needs designers' support. Don't just build web sites with black backgrounds and red text. Try to build user friendly web sites and design user friendly manuals. Try to distribute visually appealing distros. Use word of mouth. Marketing to workers is essential. One "Yes." of a boss can lead to thousands of workers to switch to Linux. The first thing comes to my mind is ads talking to bosses, CEOs and general managers on magazines like The Economist and economy pages of big newspapers. Tell them they are getting robbed by paying for software licenses and there is a better FREE alternative. Prepare campaigns for regular citizens. Tell them their government is paying unnecessary money for software licenses. Their taxes are spent impulsively. Developers: The most important group. They are the keystones of any software. They need to be introduced to Linux as early as possible. Schools are nice places to find them. How about setting up free software groups at schools? Panels and competitions?

I'm a designer and a computer geek. I currently have three computers at home. There is also an
Atari 800XL, but that doesn't count, since it's broken. VirtualBox is installed on all of them. I prefer Mac OS for working, Total Commander (which is running on
bbLean, which is running on Windows) for managing files and Linux for everything else. Linux is fast. I feel safer. I like writing on Linux. My choice would be
CrunchBang and
Openbox instead of Ubuntu and GNOME, but I couldn't find a way to remap the keys. Ubuntu has the "keyboard layout", where I can remap my keys. Yes, I tried the
xmodmap command but failed. Many thanks to Erol Özcan for introducing me to open source and giving me SUSE CDs back in 2001.

Seems it does the job but it needs a GUI. It must not be that hard to remap the keys without patching the kernel. This way I’ll need to patch the kernel after each kernel update. This reminds me the old critics of Linus Torvalds about GNOME and his right mouse button. GNOME has the function and I can assign keyboard shortcuts through Compiz so not a big problem. by

Böke, “kbd-mangler” tool could solved your remapping problem. “kbd-mangler is a tool to modify the keyboard behaviour at a low level in the linux kernel. Modifications are transparent for the entire system and work naturally with any console or X application.”

Great to see you here Erol. Thanks for your nice comment. I remap Ctrl to Alt, Alt to Windows and Windows to Ctrl on PC to make it Mac-like. I successfully remapped the keys and put the commands in an sh file to autostart at every login. The keys were remapping between different applications. Opera (which I also started to use after your recommendation years ago) for instance, treated Ctrl as Ctrl and so on. Maybe GTK? With GNOME’s keyboard layout map tool however, every application respects the new keymap. by
